Tattoos: Where are the most painful areas to get a tattoo?
Ouch! That Looks Painful!!
How many tattoos do YOU have? How many times have you heard the comment "Ouch! That looks painful" uttered in regard to one of your new tats? It never fails to be amusing when someone asks me where is the most painful to tattoo. My answer? I don't know. Its a personal thing.
Now, straight off, I am going to assume that the genitals have got to be the most painful. I have none there, so I do not have first hand knowledge, and those that do may not be a very good resource for finding out how painful it truly is. They may be into that kind of pain, so...?
I looked around the internet to do a little research on the topic and came up with this: it varies but there are certain things that point to a potentially painful spot. I have heard and read that the closer you are to the bone, the more painful the tattooing process is. With some of mine, this was true, but not with all of them.
My Experience
The top of my feet were actually pretty moderate. I truly thought they would hurt more because there is almost no flesh there, just bone and skin. The pain was moderate enough that I want more done on my feet.
On my left wrist, I have a full bracelet. A part of the bracelet rides moderately into the little bone on the palm side below the pinkie. That was a little more painful than the rest of the wrist. It was more painful than the bone on the pinkie side on the back of your hand.
The tat in my forearm was normal pain. Nothing sticks out about it.
Above my elbow didn't have any real overly tender areas, nor did my full armband above it.
The tats on my back are painfully unremarkable. Though, the one on my right shoulder blade moves into the area almost under my arm and that was more painful than the rest. I have to say that the lower spine was more painful to me than the upper spine. If it has to be hit more than twice during the process, which of course it did, if was a burning pain. This brings me to the tat on my lower back. I have a woodland elf warrior there. His feet sit on the top of my butt. He feet hurt so much I was laughing. My tattoo artist found this amusing and giggled with me.
The tats on my legs were usual pain, though there is something you should be aware of when getting your outside calf done. There is a nerve there that, when tattooing near it, will cause your foot to twitch. Its kind of an unique feeling.
Tattooing my neck was fine and nowhere near as painful as I thought it would be.
When it comes to determining just how painful a tattoo is going to be there really is no way of knowing for sure. You can ask people what it felt like for them but it may end up feeling differently for you. The one thing I can say for sure is that getting a tattoo involves some pain.
What was your most painful tattoo? Leave me a comment and let me know!!
Happy Inking!!

shadyhorse- thanks for sharing your most painful! And thank you for letting me know that the tummy is painful enough to have you doubting you are even going to get it touched up! I had wanted one on my tummy but my children left me with a spiral of stretch marks that I can't really do anything with. It comforts me to think that it would have been way too painful to get anyway. :) Thanks, again!!
i have had 4 kids and yes is very painful i say go for it if you are up to it i'm not sure what its called but you can get some stuff that numbs the area before you go to get a tattoo
Really...I didn't know that. Hmmm...I will have to give the tummy some more thought. Thanks!!
